Chasing Moments Blog Circle {Kalamazoo Lifestyle Photographer}

I can’t believe it has been a whole month since our last Chasing Moments Blog Circle. If you missed it last month, I am participating in a blog circle with some fabulous ladies who are also committing to capturing their children. Sometimes as I capture these moments, they are solitary moments…a peek into our life, a single shot. At other times, I collect these moments and this collection becomes a story. Enjoy my stories below!

The first bike ride of the year. Hannah, in her new helmet provided by the school, remembering how to ride on two wheels and Leah gaining confidence on 4 wheels before we remove the training wheels this summer.

Our first spring hike with Lexi. Yes, I said spring…it is Michigan…sometimes spring means winter jackets and hats.

Our belated Easter egg dying since we spent our spring break in NYC and CT. I don’t know that sponge painting was any less messy than dipping in dye but they had a lot of fun. I love the chipped finger nail polish.

Be sure to continue thru our circle and see how my amazing friends have chased this month. Next up is Kimberly of Fanciful Photography.

Mine on Monday {Kalamazoo Child Photographer}

I haven’t done a Mine on Monday post in awhile.  The weather was so beautiful this weekend in southwestern Michigan and we took our pup for a family hike both mornings.  I took my camera in hopes of a good shot of Lexi since she has grown so much since my last post of her.  Well needless to say, I think pet photographers are super heroes.   She is so busy, fast, and BLACK that I have such a hard time photographing her – sometimes my camera just can’t find focus since there isn’t any contrast on her at all and since she usually only gives my 0.25 seconds before running off…I am not fast enough with manual focus.  Oh and add it the fact that anytime I point the camera in her direction she thinks that is a cue to run as fast as she can towards me, especially since I usually try to shoot her down on her level.  It’s an invitation to play.  Today I will try to bribe her with hot dogs and see if I can get some eye contact.

Added bonus of having my camera is the girls both wanted their photo taken.  I love this location…I will have to take them back sometime with a session in mind.

Mine on Monday {Up North edition}

We just got back from a long weekend “up north”. To us, that means Harbor Springs/Petoskey area. As kids, my family went up there every summer to stay at my uncle’s chalet. I had always pictured taking my kids up there someday too. Well Hannah went once at 6 months and then we moved to the east coast. Six years later we are living back in Michigan and it was time to head “up north”. We had a great time at three different beaches (Harbor Springs downtown, Petoskey State Park and Surfwood), two ice cream shops (Bob-In Again, Yummies), great restaurants (Mitchell Street Pub, The Noggin Room, Papa Lou’s Pizza, Little Bay Cafe and Polish Kitchen), mini golf (Pirate’s Cove) and more.

I wanted to be sure to get a photo of the girls in front of my uncle’s place to send to him. When I opened this one, I could not believe how old they both look. My babies are growing up!

The majority of my trip photos were taken on my iphone. I use various photo apps, including: Instagram, camera, camera +,VSCO camera, and PS express. I typically take most in the regular camera app that came with the phone…but since it doesn’t allow direct upload to facebook, I then take it into Instagram to publish to facebook…plus I love the square presentation. I occasionally use camera +, if I can’t get the desired outcome with the basic app. Camera + allows you to set exposure and focus at two different points in your image. I have just discovered VSCO because a lot of my instagram photog friends use it but I haven’t played much. I basically use Photoshop Express to post vertical photos to my facebook since I can’t do them thru instagram. Diptic frames is another fun app if you want to do a mini collage of photos.

Mine on Monday {Kalamazoo Child Photographer}

A day in their lives. It is so important to capture the little things…the memories, the moments, the expressions. The first time I did a project like this was just about a year ago while living in NYC. On June 15th, after breakfast the girls were lying on the floor looking at the blurb book that I had made from that day in NY. They were enjoying it so much that I decided it was time for a new “Day in the Life” project. So I grabbed my camera (and not my iphone one!) and documented the day.

Our day included:
-looking thru the blurb book from last year’s project
-Justin Bieber on the Today show
-puzzles
-walking in Daddy’s shoes to the playset so their feet/flip flops didn’t get wet
-nap/rest time (also capturing the week the decided to sleep upside down in their beds)
-slip n slide fun
-singing with the ipod
-dinner
-handstands and dancing
-overall silliness in the grass
-movie watching on the floor to kill time until the fireflies came out
-catching and releasing fireflies (Thank you super high ISO)
-bed

I swear they really did eat lunch at some point – not sure where my camera was then.

Beyond the activities captured, as their mom, I see even more…I can almost hear their laughs and giggles. I see Leah’s “I am not awake yet” face. I see how they can play with a bucket of water every day for an hour. I see their lovies. I notice their character sheets, their fake tattoos and bumps and scrapes. I see why we have to do so much laundry. I see our real life.

I challenge you to keep your camera out all day. Take photos of YOUR real life. Watch it in slideshow format. A movie of your day. Then go one step further and get it printed in a book.

There are no rules. Photos do not need to be technically perfect. Life is not perfect.
