What to Wear Wednesday {Kalamazoo child photographer}

Love this spring look for your family photos! When people often ask me what to wear for their photos, I tell them to pick one item and build around it. Usually that item is easiest if it is Mom’s outfit or a cute girly print dress. In this combination, you can see that the coral and peach colors were pulled from the little girl’s dress to make an outfit for the older sister. All of the boys are dressed in some version of the green from the dress paired with a nice neutral like white or khaki. Mom’s beautiful khaki/beige dress works well with all of the others. Noone is dressed exactly alike but they all compliment each other. Even if you look at the various pairings (Mom and Dad, sisters, brothers, all of the kids, all of the girls, etc.), they all coordinate well. And the best part is everyone can dress to their own personality.

Happy Mother’s Day {Kalamazoo family photographer}

Happy Mother’s Day to all of my former and future clients, friends and family!!!

Every mother should make it a point to be in the photographs. Whether you hire someone for family photos or hand your camera to your husband, friend, family member, or a stranger, just get your relationship, your moments, your bond captured to be enjoyed for years to come. And don’t forget to pay it forward…when you are out and about at the zoo, in the city, at the lake, etc. and you see a mom taking a photo of her family, ask her if she wants to jump in the photo. (And get those dads with cameras in there too).

I vividly remember the day I was taking some photos of my family on a big rock in Central Park. Two ladies were walking by and offered to take a photo of all four of us. As nervewracking as it was to hand over my camera, I did it and I love having that image of my family. Everytime we went to the park after that (which was many, many times since we were living in Manhattan at the time), I kept my eye open for anyone who needed a kind stranger to help them get into their own family photos. Little did they know that I photograph people as my work and own my own photography business.

To celebrate, I thought I would share a few mom/child images from the past year.

Woman’s Best Friend

Do you have a best friend in furry form? Do you have any portraits depicting your friendship and love? Dogs are not only best friends but in my world, they are family. Check out these photos of Susan and her Oscar. He was named Oscar because she got him on the same day that the Oscars aired on TV. I love that you can see the love between them.

These photos make me so excited for this fall when we get our new puppy. I loved the relationship between Hannah and Ruby, our first dog and can’t wait for the girls to have that again. But secretly (well not so secretly anymore), I envision myself as the favorite this time around. Last time, my husband was the favorite because he did most of the training for Ruby and he took her hunting. I couldn’t compete with that. But this time, I am the one who will be doing a lot of the training as well as spending the most amount of time with him…which I hope endears me to the new dog. Of course, I am sure the two little girls in this house will be competing for the #1 spot as well.

Bubble girl { Kalamazoo baby photographer}

I recently had a session with Miss Natalie who is seven months old.   One of my favorite things about shooting in a client’s home is being able to capture some everyday activities – real life memories.  During our session, Natalie took a short bath in the kitchen sink…AND I was there to capture her FIRST time in bubbles!  Her first impression was cautious wonderment.  Then her interest slowly moved to all of the puffy white bubbles.  By the end, she was loving her first bubble bath.  As much as I adore her smile, I might just love her serious face even more – Miss Natalie is a thinker.
