We are finally getting settled in our new home and starting our new routines…which means back to the blog!!! Today a holiday themed idea.
For the past couple of years, I have wanted to do an advent calendar. I have looked around at the little houses (with treats or activities inside) or the hanging wall calendars but I just hadn’t come across one I love…until now. The idea is a book a day to countdown until Christmas. Two fellow photographers, Amber Campbell and Andrea Roberts, started their advent book calendars and I immediately loved the idea. BUT I didn’t have 24 holiday/winter books to use and didn’t want to go spend a ton of money. So I decided that I would keep it in mind for next year…trying to buy some holiday books on clearance after the holidays and maybe Santa would bring the girls a book or two. I thought about it for a day or two, still enthralled with the idea, and decided that I was going to do it anyway…so we started unofficially with Elf on a Shelf. Then we started on Day 5. I picked out all of our winter/holiday books and then picked some other family faves. After they were all wrapped, I let the girls take turns picking the numbers to tape on the books…so it is fun for all of us…I don’t even know which book will be next. Every night after PJs and brushed teeth, the girls take turns unwrapping the next book. Our first night was “Ladybug Girl” which is a favorite in our house. Tonight we had a new book “12 days of Christmas in New York City” which was a bit long for the girls – I did some abbreviated reading but Andy and I loved learning the NYC facts. Did YOU know that the star on top of the tree at Rockefeller Center is 10 feet wide and over 550 lbs?!?! Next year I already have plans to make new tags that we can reuse each year.
